[ 'Desperate to do everything on his own' sounds about right, given Ford's memory of what happened on the misty afternoon in Deerington. He hadn't even given Ford a chance to handle the situation on his own, just decided he knew how to handle it and done it.
He wants to tell Ruby that she's wrong, that Ozpin obviously hasn't changed if he's still behaving like that... But his normal zeal for pettiness and grudge-holding it beyond him right now. He can see that Ruby's obviously put up with more from Ozpin that he ever did, and he suspects Ozpin must have improved if she's willing to go to bat for him like that.
But more than that he cares about Ruby, and her opinion, and her happiness. The thought of throwing his own experiences in her face like that just doesn't feel great - especially not when Ozpin has been more mindful of boundaries than Ford would have expected since then. So instead... ]
