And I get it. I uh- I've had a big falling out with him before too. I don't want to compare it to what you probably went through. But I get why he's the way he is and how hurtful that can be to the people around him.
I don't think he means it a harmful way but he's been hurting for a long time his reactions to avoid getting hurt again come out on the fly.
It doesn't justify what might have happened, but I just wanted you to know that.

[ Ford's knee-jerk reaction is that he doesn't want to hear it. Ozpin isn't the only one that's been hurt, even if he seems to think he is, and Ruby's reassurance strikes him as hopelessly naive. He knows that isn't fair, though, and he definitely knows better than to tell her that.
He's not really intending to tell her anything except another insistence that he's okay, but another thought occurs to him. Before he even realizes he's sent the thought along to Castor, who in turn relays it to Ruby. ]
[She's not expecting to exactly change Ford's mind, she just wants to hopefully get her point of view across. He can decide what he wants to do from there.]

He... Wasn't honest with us. With the world. And he was desperate to do everything on his own. I don't necessarily blame him for that considering the people he was working with at the time. And who we were fighting.
Eventually I realized he was never going to be honest with us. ...And I forced the answers out instead.
He retreated and cut us off without a word.
I guess he thought if we knew we'd just betray him like the rest.
But we carried on fighting without him and slowly but surely he saw that and started to pitch back in.
I didn't see him fully do it back home until well after first showed up here. But in both places he's shown that he does know and realize the hurt he's done. And that he's willing to try and make things right when he gets the chance. He's just fragile despite his attitude and thinks the world around him is the same way.
I don't know. I just see that he isn't as self centered and uncaring as he likes to think he comes across.
[ 'Desperate to do everything on his own' sounds about right, given Ford's memory of what happened on the misty afternoon in Deerington. He hadn't even given Ford a chance to handle the situation on his own, just decided he knew how to handle it and done it.
He wants to tell Ruby that she's wrong, that Ozpin obviously hasn't changed if he's still behaving like that... But his normal zeal for pettiness and grudge-holding it beyond him right now. He can see that Ruby's obviously put up with more from Ozpin that he ever did, and he suspects Ozpin must have improved if she's willing to go to bat for him like that.
But more than that he cares about Ruby, and her opinion, and her happiness. The thought of throwing his own experiences in her face like that just doesn't feel great - especially not when Ozpin has been more mindful of boundaries than Ford would have expected since then. So instead... ]

[She doesn't expect to change Ford's opinion just like that. She just wanted him to see a bit of a different perspective on the whole situation. She respected his feelings on the matter and honestly certainly didn't fully object with them either. Oz for the generations he had been alive certainly did have a lot of growing up to do.]
