[Seeing how this could be problematic for Oz, Oscar quickly elaborated. ]
The Grimm are drawn to strong, negative emotions. It got so bad that the kingdom of Mantle decided to outlaw all of the arts before war broke out, to protect it's people from the Grimm.
It didn't last after that war, but it's part of why so many of us are named after color, and why color is important to us.
[ Color based names... well, Ruby and Qrow are obvious enough, and as are Pine and Ironwood. He's not sure how Ozpin fits in, but that's not the part that has his attention. ]
How was banning art supposed to reduce negative emotions?
[ Ford's heard plenty of ridiculous things about Remnant, but this might be the silliest one yet. ]
The people running Mantle didn't know if it would work. They thought that banning self expression would keep people calmer, less agitated, and easier to keep safe.
They didn't win, and the King of Vale abolished both the monarchy system and helped build Mantle under a new name.
Atlas.
But, Mr. Ford. I didn't message you to talk about history unless you really want a crash course from a guy who crammed for the tests.
[ The whole concept of "texting" is still pretty new to Robin, but she needs information, and fast. Time to leave a message for the one person she's met who seems like he knows what he's doing! ]
Hey! It's Robin. You met me when I was doing that weird cowboy thing. Good news is that I'm not doing that anymore! Weird news is that I have all these eggs and I don't know what the hell they're for! Do you know what the deal is? Cool, thanks, bye!
In that case it's something of a long story, so I'll try to keep it short.
[ Spoiler alert: it won't be short. ]
The Pthumerians were an ancient, eldritch race. Their exact nature isn't known, but they had unusual powers and were sometimes worshiped as gods. The Pthumerians became fascinated with humanity, and the Pthumerian Queen developed a plan to create a god-like creature by combining the power of the Pthumerians with the creativity and imagination of humanity. She believed this god would be able to remake the world into something better than its current state.
The Pthumerian Queen and another Pthumerian, Mother Superior, were close companions, to all appearances. Though Mother Superior protested the plan, she and the Pthumerian Queen had a daughter named Cynthia. Cynthia married a human man named Roderick Sodder, and together they had a daughter they named Julia. This is who's being referred to whenever someone speaks of 'Sodder', and she was the ultimate end goal of the Pthumerian Queen's plan.
However, Sodder's birth caused reality to warp in uncontrollable ways. Doug, the man we call the Dog Keeper, tried to help her, and her mother eventually sacrificed herself to try to keep her powers in check. When these measures failed, Mother Superior deemed her too dangerous and had her placed into a coma in order to protect humanity. However, this caused reality to shatter entirely, driving Roderick into madness and creating the Deerington dreamscape. Ramona was once a Sleeper like the rest of us, the first one that Sodder drew into the dream, and played a major role in shaping it into what it is today.
[ Ford pauses for a moment. Once he's certain he's covered it all, he adds: ]
All of the people I mentioned above, excluding the Pthumerian Queen, are represented by one of the eggs we received. We're supposed to decide what to do with each of them based on what we've learned so far.
[ The Pthumerian Queen and another Pthumerian, Mother Superior, were close companions, to all appearances. Though Mother Superior protested the plan, she and the Pthumerian Queen had a daughter named Cynthia.
what.
Surely he's joking, he can't just say that so easily, like it's nothing --
[ Robin is going to need some time to debate with herself as to whether or not this guy is serious, pulling her leg, or worse -- he's onto her.
That last one doesn't make any sense. He barely knows her. She's probably fine. Robin is so, so grateful no one can see her right now. Everything is fine.
The line is silent for a suspiciously long time. ]
[ Uuugh, he should have realized something like this would happen! At least it's probably only obvious to people that know both of them, and it's not like it could stay a secret forever. ]
Ruby's not very subtle, is she?
I appreciate your concern, Willow, but I'm fine. Everything's been handled.
It makes sense that Willow wouldn't realize, and normally Ford would be happy to leave it at that. His (former) relationship isn't anyone else's business.
But... Willow is a good kid, one that's helped him out before, one that cares enough to check on him now, and one that he still feels pretty bad about getting killed. He can at least spare her any discomfort in the future. ]
Again, I appreciate your concern, but it's not necessary.
As I said, the situation has been handled. There's nothing left for us to discuss.
[Wait. This does not line up at all with what Ozpin said. Denial, maybe? Or was he just trying to get her to leave him alone about it?]
Oh. Oh, Ford, I'm sorry. I didn't realize it was that serious. It sounded like just a typical argument. I'm sure I'm probably one of the last people you want to hear from right now. I know we're not super close or anything, but I hope we can still be friends - it's pretty cool to know someone else that's into both magic and science.
[Yes, she absolutely just called Stanford Pines cool.]
[ Ford has absolutely no idea how to come to grips with being reassured by a woman much younger than him. At first he hadn't it by not handling it, setting aside the Fluid and electing to ignore it for several minutes.
But the longer he ignores it, the more he realizes he liked hearing it. He and Willow's relationship has following a strange track, but he does consider them friends now. It's more reassuring than he thought it might to hear her confirm that she's not intending to draw a line in the sand and side with Ozpin completely. ]
You don't need to worry, Willow. I'm not intending to drop out of contact someone just because I met them via Ozpin.
I agree that it's nice to know someone else that's interested in both science and magic.
[Ford doesn't respond right away, and it worries Willow a little that maybe, yes, he does intend to drop their friendship. Or maybe she's overstepped. Maybe he doesn't want anything to do with anyone associated with Ozpin right now, and she would understand if that were the case. It wouldn't be the first time she had seen things get awkward for a circle of friends after a break up.]
I'm glad to hear it. We'll hang out after the fog's gone, if you want. I'm kinda trying to stick closer to home until it rolls out.
